KALAMAZOO COUNTY, MI — A deputy raced into action to stop a wrong-way driver on U.S. 131, a dramatic new video shows.

At 1:01 a.m. Wednesday, March 26, a Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office sergeant spotted a vehicle going north on southbound U.S. 131 near West D Avenue.

The sergeant drove to get ahead of the vehicle and attempted to stop it with emergency lights.

When that didn’t work, the sergeant got in front of the driver, grabbed spike sticks from the trunk and ran to the road to toss them in front of the speeding car to disable the vehicle.

“Good hit, good hit,” the sergeant is heard saying on a body camera video as the car runs over the device, popping its tires around the 2:00 mark of the video.

Because of the sergeant’s actions, there were no collisions and nobody was injured.

“I got a flat,” the man says to the officer from inside his disabled vehicle.

The suspect was arrested for suspected drunk driving and drug possession, police said.

The suspect’s tires were the only things damaged. The driver is awaiting arraignment at the Kalamazoo County Jail, police said.

The sheriff’s office commends the sergeant for his decisive and courageous actions.
